Medicine Veteran is a newer band starting to play around Columbia, SC. Their lead singer and guitar player, Devon Vlcek, has been playing around Columbia for a few years now as a solo acoustic artist. Ever since I have known her, she has always been full of determination. You could say I rummaged through her computer (it’s not as creepy as it sounds), and what I found was a variety of great musical influences and diary of show critiques she made for herself. She has always been critical of not only her songs but her performances, and it has helped her fine-tune her craft.
When I was talking to her the other week and I asked her what made her want to form a band, she told me she was tired of playing by herself and that she wanted the communal writing experience a band can offer a singer-songwriter. Granted, the instant appeal to Medicine Veteran is a beyond-attractive female guitar player with a strong voice, but she has assembled a band that has helped her develop into something so much more than a pretty face with a guitar.
The tracks Medicine Veteran have up on their myspace were all self-recorded and produced, and while they may not be as slick as what you hear from bands who have been at it for a while, you can see the prospective future. The song that instantly grabbed my attention is “What Did You Say” because it displays the entire band’s potential. A lot of bands these days have keys in their mix, but this song wouldn’t be complete without the haunting piano creeping in 24 seconds into the song alongside the subtle drums right before the catchy Motown-reminiscent chorus you can’t help but sing along to.
Medicine Veteran is playing September 30th at New Brookland Tavern for New Music Night. It’s a measly five bucks for six bands, a deal you can’t beat. Not only that, but all of these bands are new, and you never know what you might get to hear. For all you people who parade around about supporting local music when bigger bands like Villanova and Josh Roberts are playing, why not come and support some local music that even you don’t know.
Doors are at 6PM, with Audioform, Sleepy Eye Giant, Bane of Mortals, Living Rheum, and Jake and the Jake-ity Jake Jakes also playing.
